How does an electric storage water heater work?

In an electric storage water heater, Water is stored in the tank and the heating element heats the water to the set temperature of thermostat. Once the temperature in the tank reaches the thermo stat, it cuts off the heating element and stops further heating. Hot water is withdrawn from the top part of tank via outlet pipe of the when the tap is turned on. To continuously replace the hot water withdrawn, cold water enters the bottom of the tank through the inlet pipe.
